Review – Jet Set Knights – Retro Style Awesomeness
Jet Set Knights is a 2D platformer, with both tower defense and RPG elements. The game has a lot going on, and there’s plenty to keep even the most season gamer busy. The game may look simple at first glance, but I assure you that it’s anything but simple.
Jet Set Knights retro style goodness.
The first thing that grabbed my attention when it comes to Jest Set Knights is the retro style graphics. For anyone who grew up with classic games like Super Mario Bros, the graphics really stir the feelings of nostalgia. It’s very obvious that the developers took great care to ensure that every aspect of the game had a retro look to it. The old school graphics not only cause the game to stand out, it also serves to give the game heart. Fact is without the old school graphics I’m not sure that Jet Set Knights would work as well as it does.
While the game does have some role-playing game elements to it. Such as leveling a character up, stat growth, and stat raising equipment, one area where it lacks is story. While this is an important element to an RPG, it’s an area where platformers don’t put much consideration. This is something that’s very important to take into consideration. Despite having elements for other genres, at its core Jet Set Knights is a platformer first and foremost.
The game has a simple set up, you play as a knight and prevent enemies from getting your princess. You can put up barriers and ranged magic turrets to help protect your princess. This is where the tower defense aspect of Jet Set Knights comes into play. You’ll start the level out with a few resources stone and wood. Placing barriers and turrets consume resources, as the stage progresses however you can collect more resources to strengthen your defense.
Of course the game isn’t all about putting up defensive structures, it’s also about the knights that are protecting the princess. Each knight has a basic attack and play the same, with the exception of the knights special attack. Aside from a standard attack and a special attack you will also be able to collect various ranged weapons during the course of a level. These weapons don’t have infinite uses, this is offset by the fact that these weapons spawn extremely often throughout the course of a level.
These weapons will be essential for each level, which will prove a challenge for both novice and veteran gamers alike. Each stage is set up in a theme such as a graveyard. The stage will start off with your princess in the center of a level on the stage. You will then have a few seconds to set up you initial defenses before the first enemy wave begins to spawn.
The first wave of enemies really serve to help the player find their footing and get an idea of how the stage is going to work. Which is great, because it’s all hands on deck from then on. With each progressive wave spawning more and more enemies at a faster rate. As if that weren’t enough to keep you jumping and moving, every so many waves the boss will appear, and you must duke it out with him for your princess.
Jet Set Knights supports play with both a keyboard and a standard controller for those who wish for the more traditional play experience. A in-game casino slot machine mini-game where you can earn equipment to be used in each level. The game offers players a whole slew of un-lockable content. What is all of this extra content you ask? I can’t tell you that, you’ll have to play the game to find out. You won’t be sorry that you did, FobTi Interactive did a great job on Jet Set Knights. The game manages to do a lot of things and it somehow made all of them work.
